John’s Bio

The Roddy Gordon Band includes Roddy on lead guitar and vocals, Jane on Bass and backing vocals and John Appleby on drums.

John is a well known Adelaide drummer and has extensive experience working with a variety of musicians.

A self-taught drummer, John has been playing drums since 1968. John helped form the long running and well respected Joe Hooker Band in 1974, which re-jigged itself into The Hounds in 1978 and gained much notoriety with its first single and subsequent TV appearances. During this period John also played a short stint with Chris Finnen’s Offering.

In 1979, with “New Wave’ at its peak, John formed Safari Set. Within its short 9 month existence Safari Set headlined major shows, released a self-financed cassette, which went top ten on the 5MMM charts and won SAFM’s Summer Search Competition. John then joined Perfect Game which between 81-83 supported almost every national and international act to tour in SA, including The Clash, Men At Work, INXS, Midnight Oil and Cold Chisel.

Since then John has played in numerous bands including Scafell Pike, Glass Eye, Chris Finnen, JBE, and Steve Foster, with performances at The Adelaide Festival of Arts, The Fringe, Womadelaide and The Tour Down Under.

John is also an in demand session drummer with released product by Steve Foster, Chris Finnen, Kate Battersby and Sam White.

John is currently playing with Sympathy Orchestra who have recently released their second album and is also recording with The Joe Hooker Band.
